In Latvia, the parliament has decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women. This move has triggered a highly charged debate in Latvian society which includes attitudes towards women, pits conservatives against progressives, and highlights the fear of Russian influence in the Baltic state.
