Baikonur is the world’s largest cosmodrome and was at the centre of the Soviet space programme. The space launch facility is leased from Kazakhstan by Russia until 2050 but is a shadow of its former self in its heyday. As Moscow’s departure draws near, Kazakhstan is preparing to take over this ‘city of stars’ on the steppe.
