400 kilometres west of Copenhagen, Aarhus University Hospital shows how Denmark's healthcare system is ahead of its European neighbours. This ultra modern site spans 500,000 m2 and is the result of a merger of several hospitals in the region. Following the health system reform in 2007, Denmark has strted building 16 new "super" hospitals where the latest technology can be found, saving money and improving the quality of healthcare.

The UK Parliament is discussing a new euthanasia law. The law aims to allow people with less than six months to live to have access to assisted suicide in England and Wales, if agreed to by two doctors and a judge. Up until now, assisted suicide has been against the law, punishable by a prison sentence up to 14 years.

Extremists accused the play of ridiculing the country's heroes and stormed the Ivan Vazov National Theatre where it was being shown. In a politically-unstable Bulgaria, the arts are facing growing threats from far-right groups.

Ireland is preparing to open its wounds of the past. In Tuam, in the west of the country, a Catholic mother and baby home welcomed pregnant umarried women between 1925 adn 1961. These women were outcast by society, with sexual relations outside of marriage banned at the time. After giving birth, the mothers were separated from their babies and had to work for free in the home to pay the nuns who looked after the babies. However, many of these babies died due to neglect and those who survived were adopted or fostered. In Tuam, 796 babies and children who were hastily buried were discovered ten years ago, whilst the families continue to be faced with the silence of both the Church and the State. Thanks to a local histoiran, exhumation work is due to start in 2025 so these infants can be buried with dignity.

Amid rising threats to underwater infrastructure, Germany is investing in AI to buff up its maritime security. The multimillion ‘Argus’ project analyses vast date to detect potential threats to key infrastructure like gas pipelines, power cables and fibre-optic cables. Following the Nord Stream attacks in 2022, safeguarding these precious assets has become a major security issue in the country.
