In January 2026 a cliff several kilometres long collapsed during a storm in the Sicilian town of Niscemi. There were no casualties, but more than 1,600 people had to be evacuated as their homes lie precariously on the edge of a sheer drop. Although the risk of landslides had been known for decades, could the disaster have been avoided?
