The fall of the Assad regime at the end of 2024 and the security vacuum of the first few weeks represented an opportunity for the Islamic State (Daesh) in Syria: Up until then entrenched in the Badiya desert, its members have spread out across the country. More than 500 jihadists are also thought to have escaped from Syrian prisons when the regime fell.
