For the past 15 years, Catalonia has been using an algorithm to grant or deny its prisoners sentence adjustments. The tool, which is called RisCanvi, has been criticised by prisoners and lawyers for its lack of transparency and the ethical issues around its use. According to one study, 82% of prisoners classified as red by the algorithm have never reoffended. Despite some prisoners behaving extremely well, their permission to leave has been rejected.
