In 2022, Algeria has celebrated 60 years of independence. In 1962, nearly a million Algerian-born French people known as the "pied-noir" were evacuated from the country. They had supported France in a brutal war that had killed and abused millions of Algerians, and they feared reprisals from the local community. Though French, some had lived in the former colony for generations and had never even been to France. They still feel the shock of that forced departure to this day.
