All That Jazz

A special selection putting the spotlight on jazz.

The NDR Bigband play on home turf here at Elbjazz festival, marking their ongoing collaboration with Cuban pianist-composer Omar Sosa. 17 players in total demonstrate an uncommon versitility as they leap across a variety of styles underlined by the cosmopolitan compositions of Sosa's restless creative spirit.

In keeping with the city of Hamburg's spirit of openness, The Bridge project fuses musical currents from several countries. For this perfromance, the NDR big band joins forces with Lenine, the multi-award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter, for arrangements by Martin Fondse that transcend genres and blend elements of jazz, classical music and pop.

The Bridge: a project that builds a connection between Brazilian music, jazz and other musical trends.

Described as the "messiah of the mainstream" by the New York label Who's Who in Jazz, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton charms audiences with his gentle, melodious interpretations.

Senegal's Alune Wade is open to musical genres and all possible fusions. This virtuoso bassist, singer and composer has succeeded in blending genres ranging from Afrobeat to jazz. An immersive concert of sounds that seem both exotic and familiar.

Based in Toronto, experimental combo BadBadNotGood blends seventies soul jazz, futuristic hip-hop and electronica to create a sound as exciting as it is unique. In the early 2010s, the group made a name for itself with improbable cover versions of hip-hop tracks by the likes of Odd Future and MF Doom in a jazz style. An innovative set at Elbjazz 2024 from these soundscape pioneers.

This is where 70s soul jazz meets hip-hop and electronica.

Twee-pop melodies and acerbic lyrics about the difficult passage to adulthood: It can only be Glasgow's own Belle & Sebastian. A classic indie band who have been blending arty inclinations with spry guitar pop since the 1990s.

Moses Yoofee (piano), Roman Klobe-Barangă (bass) and Noah Fürbringer (percussion) are revitalising the jazz scene across the Rhine. The trio's explosive sound blends hip-hop, jazz, soul and R&B.

Rocket Men are masters of the art of captivating audiences by propelling them into a rousing, hard-hitting universe that the musicians have dubbed 'Drum and Space'. The six artists, from Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig, have forged a unique, cosmic style, infused with pop and jazz accents and powerful technobeats.

Shake Stew's powerful, telluric tunes make you want to sway to the beat, and invite you to let go into a trance-like state. The Austrian band captivate audiences with their blend of driving African percussion rhythms and heady brass melodies.

In his hit "Dussmann", Betterov admits that he doesn't understand the world around him. Yet his lyrics on alienation, the anonymity of big cities and adolescence, prove the contrary. Catchy guitar riffs and shoegaze elements distil the melancholy.
