The year 2024 marked a turning point in the history of the Middle East: on 8 December, the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad fell in Syria, toppled by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham after a lightning breakthrough that took the world by surprise. This explosion reshuffled the deck in terms of the forces at play throughout the region.
