After the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, the interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa took over promising to heal Syria’s wounds and preserve ‘civil peace’. But has the warlord of rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Cham (HTC), who fought under the pseudonym of Abu Mohammed Al-Joulan really left his jihadist past behind him? And will he build a state based on the rule of law that includes all parts of Syrian society?
