Is an EU army a realistic prospect?

War has returned to Europe, and the doorstep of the European Union. It's a situation that had seemed unthinkable for Europeans and has prompted EU member states to take stock of their military capability. And the results are not reassuring – armies across the continent are under-funded, under-staffed and in possession of obsolete equipment. So could the situation in Ukraine also prompt the revival of an old idea – a European army?
