When it comes to the European Union, there is a persistent refrain that it's too removed from its citizens, run by institutions devoid of democratic legitimacy. But what is democracy? Fundamentally, it is the power of the people. It involves elections to choose representatives, as well as a clear separation of executive, legislative and judicial powers, guaranteeing fundamental freedoms and respect for minorities. The EU ticks all these boxes, so why do some still feel it's not democratic?
