There is an estimated 300,000 tonnes of WWII munitions lying at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Now corroding, they pose an urgent environmental risk to the wildlife. Thanks to a €100 million German-funded emergency programme, scientists and engineers are now locating and recovering these deadly remnants – but time is running out.
