In Spain, depopulation in rural areas has left many medieval and Renaissance churches in peril. Dubbed “Empty Spain”, the phenomenon is a consequence of a mass rural exodus that took place in the 50s and 60s. Now, countless religious buildings are neglected as a result. But historians, archeologists and architects are banding together to revitalise these cultural treasures.
